James E. Carson, 83, of Lodi, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014, at Medina General Hospital. He was born at home in Akron, February 25, 1930, to Wallace H. and Ruth (Dolle) Carson.
He was a 1948 graduate of West High School. Jim entered the U.S. Army, June 22, 1950. He served overseas in Korea during the Korean War for 15 months in the 8029th MASH unit, as a surgical technician. He returned to the U.S. as a staff sergeant, and was honorably discharged on June 24,1953. Jim was very proud of his military service, though he rarely spoke of his wartime experiences. Following his military service, he went to Akron University on a Business Administration and Economics major. After two years, he got a government job and worked as a clerk for Judge McFadden in Akron. He later went to work for the City Hall in Akron as a clerk, and remained working there for several years, eventually working for the Grand Jury at the Akron Municipal Court. Eventually, Jim quit working and remained at home to take care of his mother, until she passed in 1984.
On January 19, 2001 he moved into the Newbridge Place veteran’s home in Lodi and lived there the remainder of his life. He was very close to his caregivers, and grateful for the loving attention they gave him in his later years. His hobbies included flowers, gardening, cooking, listening to music and reading. He liked to travel, sightsee, and learn about new places. Jim was very friendly, very intelligent and very social. He always had a kind word and smile for everyone.
Surviving Jim are sister, Dorothy Louise Ochs of Akron; brother, Robert Carson of Akron; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Helfrich.
Graveside service will be Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at 10:30 A.M., at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman. Pastor Joe Skladany will officiate. Visitation will be Monday, February 3, 2014 from 3 to 5 P.M., at Parker & Son Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi, OH.
